Photo archive FAQs

Who can participate in the photo archive?
Any one at all. The only requirement is that the photographs that are submitted must be of interest to travellers.

What do you do with my photographs once I upload them?
Your photographs are resized to fit into the three formats that can be found in the photo archive. Sometimes your photos are displayed on the country information pages that can be found within the destinations section of the site. Wherever your photographs are displayed, they are linked to a popup window containing the large version of the photograph. Copyright information is presented with this larger photograph.

Who owns the photographs that I upload?
You do. You can add and remove photographs as you please. A copyright notice in the form of "© Photo by [your name]" is displayed together with the popup image of your photo as well as with the medium and large formats within the photo archive.

Do you sell my photographs?
No. We have no facility to sell photographs on this site. The photo archive on this site is intended for display or showcasing purposes only. However, we receive a large number of requests for photo usage in travel related literature and magazines. If you wish to sell the photographs you upload on this site, you should link either your email address or your website address to your photographs so that interested parties can find you easily.

What size and format of image should I upload?
The image format must be JPG (or JPEG) format. The image should ideally be at least 600 pixels x 400 pixels in dimensions. Larger would be better. The image size must be kept below 1MB. Your photograph is resized into the three formats found in the photo archive. The original is discarded once the resizing is complete.

I can’t see my photograph in the photo archive. Why not?
There may be one of two reasons. 1. The photo may have not been approved for publish yet. Normally this will take less than 24 hours, but sometimes there are delays. 2. The photo may have been rejected. If this was the case you would have been notified by email.

My photograph was rejected or deleted from the site. Why?
Photographs may be rejected or deleted if they do not adhere to the guidelines.

What are the guidelines?
All photographs that are submitted:

  • Must be of interest to travellers. This does not mean that they can only contain monuments or special events. Some travellers might find a picture of you and your travel companion in a bus interesting.
  • Must contain a caption and related text that is in English (any form of English is acceptable).
  • Must not contain profanity in the caption.
  • Text or watermarks must not be embedded in the photograph.
  • Can I use the photographs in your photo archive for my magazine or school project?
You may be able to, but you must contact the owner of the photograph to obtain permission to use it. If it is not clear how to contact the owner of the image, send the photo number and details of your request to webmaster@madtravels.com and your request will be forwarded, if possible, to the owner.

I have been contacted by someone who found my photograph on your site and wants to use it in a magazine. What should I do?
It’s up to you. If you are a professional photographer and are accustomed to receiving payments for your work, then you might want to ask for remuneration for its use. Then again, if the image is being used for a non-profit purpose, you might want to simply ask the requestor to place credit beside the image or a link back to this site where more of your photographs can be found.
